Seems like the place to be in the middle of July. Much better than the campgrounds lower down the mountains. Temps were in the 70's during the day and the 50's at night. Rafter J, being higher up in the mountains, was quite comfortable during our stay. In 2006 we were there during the Sturgis event and the weather was hot. We are going to head back out west later in the summer and will be staying there again. It is not that far a walk to the office/pool area. we told them we needed 50 amp.,and my BIL has satellite.so they gave us the lower ranch camp.she told us there were trees toward the back half of site but should be fine for sat. Our view of the Hills as a vacation spot has changed over the years as some of our favorite activities in and around Deadwood have become overshadowed or even drowned out by the gambling that now dominates everything there. Although we have not visited the area in several years, we continue to read good reviews of that CG on the net. And it is well centered in the Black Hills to use as a base. I'm sure they have lots more to offer now. We first stayed there over 35 years ago when our children were quite young. The Rafter J-Bar has a long history of excelent facilities and lots of activities. I noticed on their website they have a Ranch Camp, Lower Ranch Camp, Island, etc.Ģ003 Monaco Dynasty/ 26' Haulmark Edge trailer Also the Rafter J-Bar is divided into different sections, which section is the better to stay in with larger rigs and/or multiple rigs traveling together. Has anyone stayed at both the Hill City KOA and Rafter J-Bar and which do you prefer. We have heard many good things about Rafter J-Bar and I am considering staying there instead. Rushmore this summer as well and we usually stay at the Hill City KOA. Rafter J Bar remains one of our favorite CGs in the country! Be aware that some of the sites in LRC have an upslope to the level part of the site, so you'll be backing up a slight grade with the trailer. A little shade, and level for that length trailer. Not sure of the exact sites, but we were in Lower Ranch Camp some years ago with our PUP, and the sites there were perfect for that kind of rig. I have stayed at the Rafter J-Bar Ranch park some years back and found it to be a great camp and a good central location to tour the area from. Yep, actually drove to all of these places-in the last eight years.
